A 3D laser scan of a fossil of a fish related to a herring and belonging to the genus Knightia. The fish once lived in a fresh water lake near the mountains of southwest Wyoming. During the Eocene Epoch of the Tertiary period about 50 million years ago it was deposited into soft mud at the bottom of the lake. As time passed the mud hardened into shale and formed a fossil.
